Bellot Memorial Greenwich from the River Thames path. An original antique half-page antique print published in 'The Illustrated London News' in 1856. At the base of the memorial is the legend,"To the intrepid young BELLOT of the French Navy who in the endeavor to rescue FRANKLIN shared the fate and the glory of that illustrious navigator - From his British admirers, 1853." The commander of Bellot's ship, Captain Edward Inglefield, said of his young officer, “this noble-minded officer perished in the Wellington Channel in a gale of wind, by the disruption of ice, whilst carrying dispatches from Beechy Island to Sir Edward Belcher, a service for which he generously volunteered." Bellot is also remembered by a channel in the North West Passage named Bellot Strait.
Beyond the memorial is the Royal Hospital, Greenwich, a retirement home for former sailors who had served in the Royal Navy.
Paper size 10.5 x 8 inches, printed area 9.25 x 6 inches. Very good condition save for a small crease top right.
