Cardinal Henry Edward Manning, Lord Archbishop of Westminster. Original Vanity Fair antique print, published Feb. 25th 1871. An error in the original text (see Product Gallery) referred to Manning as a “distinguished pervert” rather than a “distinguished convert”! A prominent 'high Anglican,' Manning converted to Catholicism in 1851. Appointed Archbishop of Westminster in 1865, he was responsible for the purchase of the land on which Westminster Cathedral was built. A believer in social justice, Manning was influential in resolving the Great Dock Strike of 1889 in favour of the dockers. Having died in 1892, his remains were transferred to Westminster Cathedral upon its completion in 1907. A nice print in excellent condition with original text supplied
