Princess Alice disaster on the River Thames at Woolwich. The Princess Alice passenger paddle steamer was struck by the Bywell Castle collie vessel on the River Thames at Woolwich resulting in the death of 645 people. All those who perished were from the Princess Alice, it remains to this day the greatest loss of life of any British inland waterway shipping accident.
