Southampton South Gate & Tower Hampshire. Southampton’s town walls are a sequence of defensive structures built around the town in southern England. The Normans built a castle in Southampton. However, it wasn’t until conflict with France, and French raids on the town, that the defences were expanded to include stronger walls, with towers and gate houses.
