Antique print of Pickle Herring Wharf, Bermondsey, London. This was one of many wharves that were located along the River Thames near Tower Bridge. The artist, Joseph Pennell has signed and dated the image along one of the gantries that straddle the cobbled street.Print supplied mounted to 10×8 inches (ready to frame) in conservation quality ‘antique white’ mountboard. Antique print of Pickle Herring Wharf, Bermondsey, London. The image was engraved from a pen and ink drawing by Joseph Pennell (1857 – 1926) dated in the plate 1899, published by Walter Besant c.1902. Pennell was born in Philadelphia but spent most of his professional life in London where he was a friend of fellow American James McNeill Whistler. He was a celebrated artist, etcher and lithographer who taught at the Slade School of Art. Pennell won gold medals at the Exposition Universelle (1900) and the Louisiana Purchase Exhibition (1904.) Much of his published work was done in collaboration with his wife Elizabeth.
