Antique print of Pickle Herring Wharf, Bermondsey, London. The image was engraved from a pen and ink drawing by Joseph Pennell (1857 – 1926) dated in the plate 1899, published by Walter Besant c.1902. Pennell was born in Philadelphia but spent most of his professional life in London where he was a friend of fellow American James McNeill Whistler. He was a celebrated artist, etcher and lithographer who taught at the Slade School of Art. Pennell won gold medals at the Exposition Universelle (1900) and the Louisiana Purchase Exhibition (1904.) Much of his published work was done in collaboration with his wife Elizabeth.
